Attending fashion events and watching fashion shows always brings some reflections. I usually have two kinds of them: general remarks and those which I can relate with my future business. The same is right now, after watching Fashion in Warsaw, recurring event in Kinoteka with young polish fashion brands.
The very first thing I noticed (and I'm sure you do too while watching my photos) is that there is a lot, lot, really lot of greys. Sometimes it's difficult to distinguish different brands' hangers because all looks like from one designer. I captured most significant pieces form Szara Bluza, Basic Station and Hultaj Polski and in fact, they could be lumped together into one collection. Don't get me wrong. I'm not criticizing! It means that Poles choose this sort of safe solutions - good quality designed pieces, easy to set together with every other garment from the wardrobe. I'm also the kind of man! It works! It sells! Would it work better if more colorful and unique? To answer when starting my own bussines.
Polish young designers, while being all in greys, plays a lot with textures. I really like mixing heavy felts and tulles and using embossed or thickly weaved fabrics. Using unfinished edges and minimizing details such as pockets and folds is quite frequent too. I'm still doubting if it's a highest quality minimalism or just a poverty? Still couldn't find an answer... I'm leaving it for your consideration.
Thinking about my future business I realized that there is a good deal of brands offering only one type of clothes - only blouses, only dresses, only coats etc. - or using only narrow range of fabrics for production - only knitwears, only polyurethane foam, only wool etc. It defines a brand very well. It can be recognizable really fast and it can build brand's name in customers' minds. So it influences directly on popularity and on sale. But how not to get stuck at this stage? How to be loyal to the name and to develope at the same time? I need to think it over, need to find my solution!
